Upon hearing the song “Norwegian Wood,” Toru (Matsuyama) remembers back to his life in the 1960s, when his friend Kizuki killed himself and he grew close to Naoko, Kizuki’s girlfriend. As the two try, in very different ways, to contend with their grief, Toru forms a bond with another woman, Midori.

Film Review

As with the other reviewers, I'm a huge Murakami fan. Having read the book I was looking forward to the movie version. Sadly, the movie misses the book completely and if one did not read the book to fill in the gaps, it would be very hard to follow the story. Murakami ought to play a bigger role in his movies, not just the screenplay. His other story "All God's Children Can Dance" suffered a similar fate when it was made into a movie. Perhaps the director's do not have the artistic capacity to translate his books/stories onto the silver screen? Kim Ki Duk, who has a marvelous repertoire for directing movies with minimal dialogue would have done a fabulous job with this movie, as so much is based on the emotional expressions of the cast.

Norwegian Wood is hauntingly poignant. What saves it from being a completely depressing film are the beautiful actors. The love triangle between Rinko Kikuchi (award winner for Babel) who plays Naoko, Ken'ichi Matsuyama as Toru Watanabe, and Kiko Mizuhara's film debut as Midori is complicated to say the least. The film is set in Tokyo in 1967 amidst the contrast of rioting students, and students involved in recreational activities dressed in pristine creaseless white shirts, possibly depicting innocence and purity. This image is quickly shattered by the unexplained suicide of young Kizuki, Naoko's soul mate since they were three years old.Visually, the film appears dreamlike as if the lens is masked with a filter with some scenes more blurred than others. The nature scenes, however, appear clear and precise, such as the water droplets on a leaf. The story revolves around the seasons beginning with the spring rains and progressing through to the bitter end of winter, and …

I don't think I have ever rated a film 10/10 and that is because, this is something very special. We are all different people, reading a book will always mean more to one, than another. As we are all different people and our imaginations are just as different as we are as people.Norwegian Wood has managed to touch me, as I have felt like each of these characters at some time in my life.Turn the lights off, watch it alone and make sure you are not interrupted. It will slowly creep up on you, making you feel something not just about the movie, but about you and your past.
